Milton B. Cross, Jr., 93, passed away May 8, 2013.
He was born March 23, 1920 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the son of the late Milton B. and Maggie (Airhart) Cross (deceased shortly after childbirth). Milton Sr. remarried Pearl Vertress Cross and established their home in Akron, Ohio, where Milton Jr. lived for 85 years.
Milt was a graduate of Akron North High School where he played on two state championship basketball teams. He graduated from Kent State University in 1941. A World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, Milton served in the 417th Night Fighter Squadron and was a Bronze Star recipient. He was former owner and operator of Midway Lanes in Akron.
Milt was a Sigma Nu at Kent, a member of Falls Masonic Lodge No. 735 F&AM, a member of the Akron Professional Bowlers Assoc. (PBA) and taught Children's Sunday School with his wife, Jane, at the United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls. He was an avid sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed playing golf with numerous friends in the various leagues around the area.
Milt had a kind, caring, generous spirit and lived a worthy and rewarding life. He was especially exemplary when facing trials that might have defeated others. With each loss of a personal family member, he stood tall and went on with his life. While never able to fill the huge voids of those losses, he managed to increase his love, so that by his life's end, three separate families had melded into one large strong one.
In addition to his parents, Milt was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Kuendig Cross, son, Gregory Milton Cross, and second wife, Janet Sheehy Cailor Cross. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Janet M. Cross, whom he married on June 21, 1980. He also leaves behind sons, Timothy McKee (Nancy) Cross, and Joel Edward (Barbara) Cross, both of California; daughter, Dr. Jeanne A. Cross; step-children, Lynda (Leonard) Cailor Slack, Robert (Deborah) Cailor, Roberta Paige, Diana Sheeks; grandchildren, Shannon, Amanda, Lauren, and Gregory J. Cross, David (Sally) and Mark (Jennifer) Slack, Jennifer Stout, Ryan Rebhan, Paige, Preston, and Holden Sheeks; and five great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside committal service will take place at Rose Hill Burial Park in Akron, OH, 44333. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to a charity of your choice in Milt's name.
